When replacing a broken string, to determine the size of wire needed, measure the diameter of the wire with a micrometer or caliper.  It is recommended to handle piano wire with gloves to avoid leaving residue on the wire which will eventually cause rust to develop.  Piano wire is used for a variety of different uses besides as use in strings for a piano.  Our smaller sizes of music wire are popular for other musical instruments such as dulcimers, zithers, harpsichords and auto harps.
